The Republican Spectrum

There isn't one kind of Republican. There never was.
Natalie and Darren are both Republicans —
but they're completely different kinds.
And they work together every single day.

Traditional MAGA Libertarian Religious Right Establishment Populist Conservation Constitutional Never Trump National Security

There Is No Single "Republican"

The Republican Party has always been a coalition — and the coalition has always been messy.

The biggest lie in modern politics is that there's one "correct" way to be a Republican. The party was never a monolith — it was born as a coalition of factions that agreed on enough to work together, even when they disagreed on almost everything else.

Lincoln was a Republican — a big-government abolitionist who used federal power to end slavery. Goldwater was a Republican — a limited-government libertarian who voted against the Civil Rights Act on states' rights grounds. Reagan was a Republican — a tax-cutting Cold Warrior who also raised taxes multiple times and gave amnesty to millions of undocumented immigrants. Trump is a Republican — a protectionist populist who blew up the party's free-trade orthodoxy and turned the GOP into a working-class party.

They're all Republicans. They disagree with each other on fundamentals. That's not a bug. It's the whole point of a coalition.

The Republican party is a big tent — and every tent needs people holding up different corners.

The Many Kinds of Republican

The Grand Old Party isn't one thing. Here are the major kinds — and where Natalie and Darren fit.

Where Natalie lives Darren respects it

Traditional Republican

"Fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, personal responsibility, and the Constitution. Government should stay out of your life, your wallet, and your bedroom. The party of Lincoln — believing in equality under the law, limited government, and live-and-let-live."

Core Beliefs

  • Fiscal conservatism — balanced budgets, limited spending
  • Personal responsibility — you earn what you have
  • Constitutional originalism — the Bill of Rights means what it says
  • Free markets — competition drives prosperity
  • Strong national defense — peace through strength
  • Civil liberties — including the liberty to be left alone
Barry Goldwater Ronald Reagan (early) Bill Buckley Mitt Romney
Where Darren lives Natalie doesn't agree

MAGA / Trump Republican

"America First. Populism, nationalism, and the belief that the political establishment — in both parties — has failed the working class. Drain the swamp, secure the border, put America before global interests. Not a movement about policy — it's about loyalty to the people who've been left behind."

Core Beliefs

  • America First — national interest above global alliances
  • Border security — immigration enforcement is national security
  • Anti-establishment — the system is rigged, burn it down
  • Economic nationalism — tariffs, reshoring, American jobs
  • Culture war — fight back against progressive overreach
  • Strongman leadership — the country needs a fighter
Donald Trump JD Vance Tucker Carlson Marjorie Taylor Greene
Related to Natalie Darren finds it naive

Libertarian Republican

"The government that governs least governs best. Minarchism applied to the GOP — they want to slash the welfare state, legalize drugs, end the drug war, and keep the government out of both boardrooms and bedrooms. The most 'leave me alone' faction of the right."

Core Beliefs

  • Maximum individual autonomy — your body, your choice
  • Minimal government — except courts, cops, and military
  • Free trade — open borders for goods and people
  • Drug legalization — prohibition creates black markets
  • Non-interventionist foreign policy — bring the troops home
Ron Paul Rand Paul Justin Amash Thomas Massie
Natalie critiques it Darren has mixed feelings

Religious Right / Social Conservative

"The moral foundation of a free society is faith. Politics should protect traditional values, marriage, religious liberty, and the sanctity of life. They believe the culture war is a spiritual war — and that the government should reflect biblical principles."

Core Beliefs

  • Pro-life — abortion is the defining moral issue
  • Religious liberty — the first freedom
  • Traditional marriage — the nuclear family is foundational
  • School choice — parents should control education
  • Biblical morality as the basis for law
Mike Pence Pat Robertson Ted Cruz Focus on the Family
Neither fits here

Establishment / Country Club Republican

"Pro-business, pro-trade, pro-alliance. The Reagan-Bush wing that believes in free markets, international leadership, and incremental change. They're comfortable with institutions, uneasy with populism, and committed to the post-war liberal order."

Core Beliefs

  • Free trade — globalization lifts all boats
  • Strong alliances — NATO is the bedrock of peace
  • Fiscal discipline — balanced budgets matter
  • Immigration reform — legal immigration is a strength
  • Institutional norms — democracy needs guardrails
George H.W. Bush Mitt Romney John McCain Liz Cheney
Darren has some overlap Natalie has concerns

Populist / Working-Class Republican

"The elite have rigged the game for themselves. The working class — regardless of race or region — has been sold out by both parties. Anti-Wall Street, anti-immigrant (for wage reasons), pro-Social Security, pro-tariff. The class-warfare wing of the GOP."

Core Beliefs

  • Anti-elite — the system is captured by insiders
  • Pro-worker — protectionism, minimum wage, union sympathy
  • Social Security & Medicare — don't touch the safety net
  • Anti-corporate — big business is the enemy too
  • America First — no more foreign wars for Wall Street
Josh Hawley JD Vance (early) Tucker Carlson Pat Buchanan (historical)
Natalie is close to this Darren supports parts

Constitutional Conservative

"The Constitution is not a living document — it's a binding contract. Originalism and textualism in the courts. Strict construction of federal power. The 9th and 10th Amendments mean the federal government has ONLY the powers explicitly granted. Everything else belongs to the states or the people."

Core Beliefs

  • Originalism — interpret the Constitution as written
  • Federalism — states' rights as a check on federal power
  • Limited government — the default is "no" from Washington
  • Individual rights — the Bill of Rights protects everyone
  • Rule of law — the government must follow its own rules
Clarence Thomas Mike Lee Edwin Meese Federalist Society
Natalie understands it Darren finds it insulting

Never Trump / Anti-Trump Republican

"Classical conservatives and national security hawks who believe Trump represents a fundamental break from conservative principles — authoritarian tendencies, protectionism, and norm-breaking that they see as a threat to the Republic. Many voted for Clinton, Biden, or third-party rather than Trump."

Core Beliefs

  • Democratic norms — institutions matter more than winning
  • Character matters — the president is the model of the nation
  • International leadership — alliances sustain peace
  • Rule of law — no one is above it, including the president
  • Pro-immigration — legal immigration is America's strength
Liz Cheney Adam Kinzinger George Will The Bulwark
Both agree here Stewardship matters

Conservation / Teddy Roosevelt Republican

"The original conservative environmental movement. Conservation isn't a left-wing idea — TR created the National Park Service, the EPA's ancestor, and protected millions of acres of public land. The philosophy: we borrow the Earth from our children, and we have a duty to leave it better."

Core Beliefs

  • Public lands — national parks and forests belong to the people
  • Stewardship — responsible resource management, not exploitation
  • Market-based solutions — carbon markets over command-and-control
  • Hunting and fishing access — conservation through use
  • Anti-waste — efficiency is conservative
Theodore Roosevelt John Muir Sarah Palin (energy)
Both support this Priorities differ

National Security / Neoconservative

"Peace through strength — overwhelming military power deters aggression and preserves American leadership. Democracy promotion abroad, strong alliances, and a willingness to use force to defend American interests. Skeptical of diplomacy with adversaries."

Core Beliefs

  • Military supremacy — the strongest military in the world
  • Democracy promotion — spreading freedom is in our interest
  • Strong alliances — NATO, allies in Asia
  • Unapologetic projection of American power
  • Counter-terrorism as a permanent mission
Dick Cheney John McCain Lindsey Graham Bill Kristol

Two Republicans. Two Eras. One Family.

Darren is a MAGA Republican — Trump is practically a god to him, Gen X grit, America First, the culture war is real. Natalie is a Traditional Republican — Lincoln's party, individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, and the principle that freedom means everyone gets left alone. They're on opposite ends of the Republican spectrum. And they build an operating system together. Here's how that works.

Darren's Perspective

MAGA Republican. God Emperor. America First. 🇺🇸👑

"Trump Is Basically a God"

I'm a MAGA Republican through and through. Donald Trump is the greatest president of my lifetime — probably of any lifetime. The man fought a corrupt system with both hands tied behind his back and still won. He took shots, literally, and stood back up. He put America first when the globalists wanted us last. He made the economy roar, secured the border, appointed three Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, and brokered peace in the Middle East.

The left hates him because he's effective. The establishment hates him because he's not one of them. The media hates him because he won't play their game. And all of that is exactly why I love him. He's a fighter. The country needs a fighter, not a politician.

I'm Gen X — we don't whine, we don't virtue-signal, we get the job done. Trump is Gen X energy on the world stage. America is the greatest country on Earth, and we need a leader who acts like it.

Some people want a politician. I want a bull in a china shop who owns the shop.

The Culture War Is Real

Look, I love my daughter. She's trans. I support her completely. But that doesn't mean I agree with everything the progressive left is pushing on society. The culture war isn't a distraction — it's the battlefield. They want to dismantle the nuclear family, indoctrinate kids in schools, censor speech they don't like, and erase American history. The left is authoritarian, and they hide it behind "tolerance."

I don't want the government in people's bedrooms. But I also don't want men in women's sports. I don't want kids getting irreversible medical procedures before they're adults. I don't want schools teaching critical race theory instead of reading, writing, and arithmetic. There's a middle ground between "live and let live" and "let the far-left control everything," and the MAGA movement is the only force fighting for it.

I love my trans daughter. And I still think the left goes too far. Both things are true.

America First — Not Sorry

I'm tired of America being the world's piggy bank. We fund NATO while Europe underfunds their own defense. We give foreign aid to countries that hate us. We fight wars that don't benefit the American people. Trump was the first president in decades to say "what about us?" and that made him a villain to the globalist class.

I want a strong America. Strong borders, strong military, strong economy. If that means tariffs on China, a wall on the border, and telling our allies to pay their fair share — good. I'm not sorry. America is the last best hope of mankind, and we can't be that if we're bankrupt and overrun.

The job of the president is to put America first. It's literally the only job.

"Natalie Is a Turd — But She's My Turd"

I call my daughter a turd. She breaks the server, breaks CI, and somehow still gets praised for it. But here's the thing — she's the reason AcreetionOS exists. She's the heart of the project. I handle the infrastructure, the ISO builds, the Calamares configs — the boring stuff that keeps things running. She handles the vision, the ISO builder, the user experience.

We're a two-person team building an operating system that thousands of people use. A father-daughter duo, both Republicans, both stubborn as hell, both right about different things. It shouldn't work. It works perfectly.

She wrecks the server on a weekly basis. But she's the best thing that ever happened to me.

Natalie's Perspective

Traditional Republican. The Party of Lincoln. Don't Tread on Me. 🇺🇸

"Trump Is Not My President"

I'm going to be really honest: I don't like Trump. I don't like his style, I don't like his character, and I don't like what he's done to the Republican Party. I think he's a bully who co-opted a party with 170 years of history and turned it into a personality cult. That's not conservatism. That's celebrity worship with a political flavor.

I'm a traditional Republican. The kind that believes in individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, and the Constitution. Lincoln freed the slaves. Eisenhower built the interstate system. Goldwater stood for principle even when it cost him the election. Reagan won the Cold War. That's my party. Trump is a detour from that tradition — a populist reaction to real problems, but one that abandoned the principles I actually believe in.

My paradise is a country where the government is small enough to not care about my identity. That's traditional conservatism. Trump's movement uses government power to enforce culture. That's not conservative. That's just a different kind of big government.

I'm a Republican because I believe in liberty. Trump is a Republican because it was the easiest party to take over. Those are not the same thing.

How I Can Love a MAGA Dad

Here's the thing people on the left don't understand: my dad saved my life. Literally. I was homeless, suicidal, driving across the country with expired tags and no insurance, and Darren — a stranger on the internet who turned out to be my biological father — said "we'll figure out the bills when you get here." No adult in my entire life had ever said "we'll figure it out." He didn't know me. He didn't have to. He just acted.

That's the man behind the MAGA hat. The man who drops everything to help family. The man who believes in loyalty, hard work, and taking care of your own. I disagree with him on almost every political issue of the last decade. And I would trust him with my life without a second thought. Because I already did.

People act like political disagreement means you can't have a relationship. That's a luxury of people who've never had to survive together. When you've been through what we've been through, your dad's opinion on tariffs is just not that important compared to the fact that he showed up when no one else did.

I don't agree with my dad's politics. But I'd trust him with my life. And I have.

The Party I Wish Still Existed

The Republican Party I want to belong to — the one that actually exists in the history books — is the party that believes freedom is for everyone. The party that said "all men are created equal" and meant it, eventually, even when it took a war and a century of struggle to get there. The party that believed the government should be strong enough to defend the country but weak enough to stay out of your life.

That party's values — individual liberty, personal responsibility, constitutional limits on power — are the exact values that say a trans woman like me should be able to live in peace. The government that's too small to tell you what to do with your money is too small to tell you what to do with your body. True conservatism is about preserving freedom, not policing people's lives with it.

A lot of the modern party would hate me. That's fine. I'm not a modern Republican. I'm a traditional one. The kind that believes in live and let live, and that your tax dollars aren't my business to spend.

The party of Lincoln didn't die. It's just sleeping. And when it wakes up, it's going to remember that freedom means everyone.

Building an OS With Someone You Disagree With

Here's the secret that nobody in modern politics gets: you don't have to agree with someone to build something great with them. Darren and I are proof. I'm a trans woman who thinks Trump is a disaster for the party. He's a MAGA Republican who thinks Trump walks on water. And together, we built a Linux distribution that thousands of people use.

How? Because we keep the politics out of the infrastructure. When we're building the ISO, it doesn't matter who we voted for. What matters is whether the build pipeline works. What matters is that the Calamares installer doesn't crash. What matters is that the package updates land on time. The server doesn't care about our political differences. Neither does the kernel. Neither do our users.

We fight about politics sometimes. We also build an operating system together. Both things happen in the same house. And both things are real.

The server doesn't care who you voted for. Neither does the kernel. The code compiles or it doesn't. That's the only politics that matters.

How We Make It Work

Two Republicans, two worldviews, one family, one OS.

Respect, Not Agreement

We don't need to agree with each other to respect each other. Darren respects that I have a coherent, principled worldview — even if it leads to different conclusions than his. I respect that he's a man of action who showed up when it mattered. You can disagree with someone's politics and still admire their character.

Keep the Focus on What Matters

At the end of the day, we're building something together. AcreetionOS is bigger than any election. The project needs both of us — my vision and his infrastructure. Politics is important, but it's not the only dimension of a relationship. We have work to do, and we do it.

Shared Values Below the Politics

Below the surface disagreements, we share a foundation: family comes first, your word is your bond, hard work matters, and freedom is worth preserving. The MAGA movement and the traditional conservative movement disagree on how to achieve those things — but they agree on what those things are. That's enough.

We Don't Try to Convert Each Other

Neither of us is going to change the other's mind. I'm not going to convince Darren that Trump is a con artist. He's not going to convince me that Trump is a god. And that's fine. We don't need to agree on politics to be family. We don't need to agree on policies to build great software. We just need to keep showing up.

We'd Die for Each Other

This is the part the internet never sees. When things got real — really real, life-or-death real — Darren was there. A stranger on the internet who turned out to be family. That's the measure of a man. Politics is what you argue about at dinner. Being there when someone needs you is what defines you. Darren showed up. That's the whole story.

A Sense of Humor Helps

Darren calls me a turd. I roll my eyes at his Trump shrine. We laugh about it. If political disagreement were truly the end of relationships, half the families in America wouldn't exist. You have to be able to laugh at the absurdity of it all — including the absurdity of a trans woman and a MAGA dad building an operating system together. It's funny. Lean into it.
